1. Love or hate?

When reading today’s verses of the Gospel one can easily fall into a trap. Does Jesus really urge us to hate others? To better comprehend the meaning of these words we should be aware of their Jewish context.

2. Key words

If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.

This sentence from the Gospel is one of the most difficult to understand. How is it possible that Jesus, who talks so much about love of God and neighbour, should say such words! To understand this, one must read the text in the context of Jewish culture.

In the Bible, the expression “to hate” means “to love less.” For example, in the Old Testament, Leah says the Lord has heard that she was loved less by her husband Jacob (Gen 29:33). The word used in the Hebrew original is precisely the word “hate” (senu’a). The very same word is used by Jesus to indicate that those who want to follow Him must choose loving Jesus as their first and foremost love. Such love does not by any means exclude loving one’s family or oneself. However, the love of Christ is the greater love.

In the same way, anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions, cannot be my disciple.

When calling the disciples, Jesus does not begin by making promises, but rather sets out His requirements. Another condition relates to material things. Jesus’ disciples hold God to be the greatest treasure of their lives. Jesus invites those who want to follow him to love him more than everything they have, more than material possessions. This does not mean that they cannot enjoy what is necessary for everyday living. However, things must never obscure God, the disciples’ mission and what really matters to them.

3. Today

“If God comes first, all is in the right place;” the words of St. Augustine help us to understand today’s verses of the Gospel. They moreover help us come to terms with our own lives. What do I hold important in my life? What prevents me from treating God as the most important? Today, I will ask Jesus to be forever important in my life and to help me love Him the most.

1 ¿Amor u odio?

Uno puede entrar en pánico al leer el Evangelio de hoy. ¿Acaso Jesús fomenta el odio? El contexto judío en el que se pronunciaron las palabras de Jesús nos ayuda a entender el Evangelio.

2 Palabras clave

«Si alguno quiere seguirme y no me prefiere a su padre y a su madre, a su esposa y a sus hijos, a sus hermanos y a sus hermanas, más aún, a sí mismo, no puede ser mi discípulo.»

Esta es una de las frases del Evangelio más difíciles de entender porque el texto original usa la palabra que literalmente se traduce como menospreciar o incluso odiar. ¿Cómo es posible que Jesús, que tanto habla del amor a Dios y al prójimo, pronuncie de repente tales palabras? Para entenderlo, hay que leer el texto en el contexto de la cultura judía.

La expresión “menospreciar” significa en la Biblia “amar menos”. Por ejemplo, en el Antiguo Testamento, Lea confiesa que el Señor Dios escuchó que ella era amada menos. Literalmente el original hebreo dice ‘menospreciada’, senu’a, por su marido Jacob (Génesis 29:33). Jesús utilizó una expresión similar para decir que los que quieren seguirle deben elegir amar a Jesús en primer lugar. Este amor no excluye el amor a la familia o a uno mismo. Sin embargo, es más grande que ella.

«Así pues, cualquiera de ustedes que no renuncie a todos sus bienes, no puede ser mi discípulo.»

Al llamar a los discípulos, Jesús no empieza su discurso con promesas, sino que primero señala las exigencias. Otra condición está relacionada con las cosas materiales. Para los discípulos de Jesús, el mayor tesoro de la vida es Dios. Jesús invita a los que quieren seguirlo a amarlo más que todo lo que tienen, más que las cosas materiales. Esto no significa que no puedan disfrutar de las cosas necesarias para la vida. Pero estas cosas nunca deben apartarles de Dios, de su misión y de los asuntos que son más importantes.

3 Hoy

“Si Dios es el primero, todo estará en su sitio”. Estas palabras de San Agustín nos ayudan a entender el Evangelio de hoy. También nos ayudan a poner en orden nuestra propia vida. ¿Qué es importante para mí? ¿Qué me impide poner a Dios en primer lugar? Hoy le pediré a Jesús que sea siempre importante en mi vida y que lo ame más.
