1. Introduction

The parable of the mustard seed, the mulberry tree and the servant is not a story about the past, but about what we all encounter in our daily lives. The story concerns the spiritual and the material. Contrary to appearances, there is no opposition here.

2. Key words

If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, “Be uprooted and planted in the sea,” and it would obey you.

The mustard seed was the smallest of all the grains known in Jesus’ time. It is smaller even than poppy seed. However, it has great power. This is what Jesus said about it earlier: “The reign of God is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”

The same is true of faith; even the smallest one has great power and can do the impossible, as Jesus demonstrates. He offers the example of a mulberry tree. Firstly, the mulberry tree has such an extensive root system that it is almost impossible to uproot it. Secondly, no one plants trees in the sea. So the point of Jesus’ words is that a person who has even the tiniest bit of faith can do things that are impossible from a human point of view.

Faith is not limited to the liturgy. At the end of every Mass, there is a blessing and a sending out to live out faith in daily duties, as Jesus goes on to say in today’s verses of the Gospel by evoking the person of the servant.

We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.

The term “unprofitable”, Greek “achreioi”, is a reference to the word “chreios”, or debt. In this context, then, to be achreioi may mean: We have no debt as we have done what we were obliged to do. All we have and all we are is a gift from God. We only pay off the debt with our lives. Scripture adds: “God loves a cheerful giver.”

3. Today

Jesus highlighted what St. Paul expressed in words later: “faith without works is dead.” No wonder, then, that when talking about faith Jesus offers the example of mustard seeds, used for improving blood circulation and rejuvenation. What does my faith urge me to do?

La parábola sobre la semilla de mostaza, el árbol frondoso y el siervo no es una historia sobre el pasado, sino sobre lo que nos afecta a cada uno de nosotros en nuestra vida cotidiana. Trata de lo espiritual y lo material. A pesar de las apariencias, no hay ninguna oposición allí.

2. Palabras clave

Si tuvieran fe, aunque fuera tan pequeña como una semilla de mostaza, podrían decir a ese árbol frondoso: ‘Arráncate de raíz y plántate en el mar’, y los obedecería.

La semilla de mostaza es la más pequeña de todas las semillas conocidas en la época de Jesús. Es más pequeña incluso que un grano de semilla de amapola. Sin embargo, tiene un gran poder. Esto es lo que anteriormente dijo Jesús al respecto: „¿A qué es semejante el reino de Dios, y con qué lo compararé? Es semejante al grano de mostaza, que un hombre tomó y sembró en su huerto; y creció, y se hizo árbol grande, y las aves del cielo anidaron en sus ramas”.

Lo mismo ocurre con la fe. Incluso la más pequeña tiene un gran poder y puede hacer lo imposible, como dice Jesús más adelante. Pone el ejemplo de un árbol de moras. En primer lugar, la morera tiene un sistema de raíces tan extenso que es casi imposible arrancarla. Y en segundo lugar, nadie planta árboles en el mar. Así que el sentido de las palabras de Jesús es que una persona que tiene la más mínima fe puede hacer cosas que son imposibles desde el punto de vista humano.

La fe no se limita sólo a la liturgia. Al final de cada misa hay una bendición y una ordenación para vivir la fe en los deberes cotidianos, como sigue diciendo Jesús en el Evangelio de hoy invocando la persona del siervo.

No somos más que siervos, sólo hemos hecho lo que teníamos que hacer.

La palabra “inútil”, en griego “achreioi”, hace referencia a la palabra “chreios”, que significa deuda. Ser achreioi, por tanto, puede significar en este contexto: somos libres de deudas, hemos hecho lo que debíamos hacer. Todo lo que tenemos y lo que somos lo tenemos gracias a Dios. Con nuestras vidas sólo estamos pagando esa deuda. Y la Escritura añade: “Dios ama al que da con alegría”.

3. Hoy

Jesús concede gran importancia a lo que San Pablo expresó más tarde con las palabras “la fe sin obras muere”. No es de extrañar, pues, que el Señor Jesús, al hablar de la fe, ponga el ejemplo del grano de mostaza, que se utilizaba para mejorar la circulación de la sangre y para despertar la vida. ¿A qué acciones me estimula mi fe?
