The Abraham J. Heschel Center for Catholic-Jewish Relations – a new scientific, educational, and cultural unit to deepen Catholic-Jewish relations internationally – began its activities at the Catholic University of Lublin on Monday. Scientific research, publishing activities, student exchanges, as well as international symposia, conferences, debates and cultural events are the main tasks of the institution.

Il Centro per le Relazioni Cattolico-Ebraiche Abraham J. Heschel – una nuova unità scientifica, educativa e culturale, che intende approfondire le relazioni cattolico-ebraiche nella dimensione internazionale – ha iniziato lunedì la sua attività presso l’Università Cattolica di Lublino. Ricerca scientifica, attività editoriali, scambio di studenti, ma anche simposi internazionali, conferenze, dibattiti ed eventi culturali sono i compiti più importanti di questa istituzione.

Heschel Zentrum für katholisch-jüdische Beziehungen – eine neue Wissenschafts-, Bildungs- und Kultureinrichtung zur Vertiefung der katholisch-jüdischen Beziehungen auf internationaler Ebene – wurde am Montag an der Katholischen Universität Lublin (KUL) eingeweiht. Wissenschaftliche Forschung, Herausgabe von Publikationen, Studentenaustausch sowie internationale Symposien, Konferenzen, Debatten und kulturelle Veranstaltungen sind die wichtigsten Aufgaben der Einrichtung.

Гешеля – нова наукова, освітня та культурна ініціатива, яка має поглибити католицько-юдейські відносини в міжнародному вимірі – в понеділок розпочала свою діяльність у Люблінському католицькому університеті. Наукові дослідження, видавнича діяльність, обмін студентами, а також міжнародні симпозіуми, конференції, дебати та культурні заходи є головними завданнями цієї установи.

The inauguration of the Abraham J. Heschel Center for Catholic-Jewish Relations at the Catholic University of Lublin is a historic event, I am convinced that it is important not only for our University,” Rector of the Catholic University of Lublin Rev. Prof. Miroslaw Kalinowski stressed. “The pillars on which the Center’s activities are based can be summed up in a motto: Common Bible – Common Past – Common Future. They also relate to shared biblical roots, to the community of the history of both societies, as well as to the need to shape a future based on dialogue and openness to multiculturalism,” said the Rector of the Catholic University of Lublin.

Israeli Ambassador to Poland Yacov Livne wrote in a special letter for the occasion: “Focusing on research, the Centre will open up to questions related to Jewish history, culture and legacy as well as to Polish-Jewish relations over the centuries, including the present.”

The daughter of the Center’s patron, Professor Susannah Heschel, a researcher at Dartmouth College in the US, recalled her father’s most important ideas, including those concerning Christian-Jewish dialogue. “What you are doing is in line with my father’s message not to be indifferent to each other,” Prof. Heschel said.

Rabbi Abraham Skorka, who works for interreligious dialogue and has been friends with Pope Francis for many years, stressed that the Catholic University of Lublin – by creating the Heschel Center – is giving a positive response to the call to Jews and Catholics to change the course of history, and “to create the paths of dialogue that allow a future of understanding, peace, and affection”.

Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa, recalled that the history of Christian-Jewish relations has been difficult, which is why dialogue between brotherly religions is of such great value. “Christian-Jewish dialogue is the first and most important dialogue, because it is a dialogue with our roots. We cannot have approach the teaching of Jesus Christ, if we are not aware of his Jewish roots,” the archbishop said.

In turn, the President of the Polish Bishops’ Conference Archbishop Stanislaw Gądecki stressed that the Heschel Center is the realization of the conciliar declaration “Nostra aetate” and the teaching of the Church expressed by successive popes. He also recalled the role of the Patron of the Catholic University of Lublin, Pope John Paul II, who is a role model in Catholic-Jewish dialogue. “He was the first pope to pray together with a rabbi for peace, the first pope to enter a synagogue and to visit the German Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. John Paul II was the first pope to pray at the Western Wall, asking God for forgiveness and mutual brotherhood.”

During the ceremony, which concluded with the presentation of appointments to the Board of Directors of the Abraham J. Heschel Center for Catholic-Jewish Relations at the Catholic University of Lublin and a speech by Cantor Symcha Keller, the Honorary Committee and the Center’s Scientific Council of the new institution were also introduced.

The Scientific Council and Honorary Committee included Rabbi Prof. Abraham Skorka of Argentina; Rabbi David Rosen, Director of Interreligious Relations of the American Jewish Committee; New York University Professor Rabbi Prof. Lawrence H. Schiffman; Oxford University Professor of Hebrew and Jewish Studies Prof. Judith Olszowy-Schlanger; Prof. Amy-Jill Levine, a specialist of New Testament Studies E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter at Vanderbilt University Divinity School in Nashville; Prof. Glenda Abramson of Oxford University; Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa; Prof. Slawomir Zurek, Director of the International Center for the Study of the History and Cultural Heritage of the Jews of Central and Eastern Europe; and Prof. Yagil Limore of Bar Ilan University in Tel Aviv.

La inauguración del Centro Abraham J. Heschel para las Relaciones Católico-Judías en la Universidad Católica de Lublin es un acontecimiento histórico, y estoy convencido de que no sólo para nuestra universidad”. – subrayó el rector de la Universidad Católica de la República Católica de Lublin, el profesor padre Mirosław Kalinowski. “Los fundamentos en los que se basan las actividades del Centro pueden resumirse en el lema: Biblia común – Pasado común – Futuro común. “L’inaugurazione del Centro per le Relazioni Cattolico-Ebraiche Abraham J. Heschel dell’Università Cattolica di Lublino (KUL) è un evento storico e sono convinto non solo per la nostra università” – ha dichiarato il Rev. Prof. Mirosław Kalinowski, Rettore della KUL. “I pilastri su cui si basano le attività del Centro possono essere riassunti nello slogan: Bibbia condivisa – Passato condiviso – Futuro condiviso. Si riferisce alle comuni radici bibliche, alla storia comune di entrambe le comunità, nonché alla necessità di plasmare un futuro basato sul dialogo e sull’apertura al multiculturalismo” – ha affermato il Rettore della KUL.

L’ambasciatore israeliano in Polonia, Yacov Livne ha scritto in una lettera speciale per la cerimonia: “Concentrandosi sulle attività scientifiche e di ricerca, il Centro si apre alle questioni relative alla storia, alla cultura e al patrimonio degli ebrei, nonché alle relazioni polacco-ebraiche nel corso dei secoli, compresi i giorni nostri”.

La prof.ssa Susannah Heschel, figlia del patrono del Centro, che conduce ricerche al Dartmouth College negli Stati Uniti, ha richiamato le idee più importanti di suo padre, anche per quanto riguarda il dialogo ebraico-cristiano: “Quello che state facendo è in linea con il messaggio di mio padre, di non essere indifferenti a sé stessi” – ha asserito la prof.ssa Heschel.

Agendo in favore del dialogo interreligioso, il rabbino Abraham Skórka, da molti anni amico di Papa Francesco, ha sottolineato che l’Università Cattolica di Lublino, nel creare il Centro Heschel, ha dato una risposta positiva all’appello rivolto agli ebrei e ai cattolici di cambiare il corso della storia, aprendosi al dialogo che consenta un futuro pieno di comprensione reciproca, pace e cordialità.

Mons. Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Patriarca latino di Gerusalemme, ha ricordato che la storia dei rapporti cristiano-ebraici è stata difficile, per questo il dialogo tra le religioni fraterne è così prezioso. – “Il dialogo cristiano-ebraico è il primo e più importante tipo di dialogo, perché è un dialogo con le nostre radici. Non possiamo avere accesso agli insegnamenti di Gesù Cristo se non siamo consapevoli delle sue radici ebraiche” – ha affermato l’Arcivescovo.

Mons. Stanisław Gądecki, Presidente della Conferenza Episcopale Polacca, ha sottolineato a sua volta che il Centro Heschel dell’Università Cattolica di Lublino è l’attuazione della dichiarazione conciliare “Nostra aetate” e dell’insegnamento della Chiesa espresso dai Papi successivi. Ha anche ricordato il ruolo di Patrono dell’Università Cattolica di Lublino di Papa Giovanni Paolo II, un modello da seguire nel dialogo cattolico-ebraico. “E’ stato il primo Papa a pregare per la pace insieme ad un rabbino, il primo Papa ad entrare in una sinagoga e a visitare il campo di concentramento nazista tedesco di Auschwitz-Birkenau. Giovanni Paolo II è stato il primo Papa che ha pregato al Muro del Pianto, chiedendo a Dio perdono e fratellanza reciproci”.

Nel corso della cerimonia, che si è conclusa con la presentazione del Consiglio di Amministrazione del Centro per le Relazioni Cattolico-Ebraiche Abraham J. Heschel della KUL, si è esibito il cantore Symcha Keller ed è stato presentato il Comitato d’Onore e del Consiglio Scientifico del Centro della nuova istituzione. „Die Einweihung des Abraham J. Heschel Zentrums für katholisch-jüdische Beziehungen an der Katholischen Universität Lublin ist ein historisches Ereignis, und ich bin überzeugt, dass das nicht nur für unsere Universität gilt“ – betonte der Rektor der KUL, Pfarrer Prof. Mirosław Kalinowski. „Die Säulen, auf die sich die Arbeit des Zentrums stützt, lassen sich mit der Parole zusammenfassen: Gemeinsame Bibel – Gemeinsame Vergangenheit – Gemeinsame Zukunft. Sie verweisen auf die gemeinsamen biblischen Wurzeln, auf die gemeinsame Geschichte der beiden Gemeinschaften sowie auf das Bedürfnis, eine Zukunft zu gestalten, die auf Dialog und Offenheit für den Multikulturalismus aufbaut“ – sagte der Rektor der KUL.

Der israelische Botschafter in Polen, Yacov Livne, schrieb in einem Sonderbrief zur feierlichen Einweihung: „Das Zentrum konzentriert sich auf Wissenschafts- und Forschungsarbeit und öffnet sich damit für die jüdische Geschichte, jüdische Kultur und das jüdische Erbe sowie für die polnisch-jüdischen Beziehungen im Laufe der Jahrhunderte, bis in die Gegenwart hinein.“

Die Tochter des Patrons des Zentrums, Prof. Susannah Heschel, die am Dartmouth College in den USA forscht, erinnerte an die wichtigsten Ideen ihres Vaters, darunter auch an die des christlich-jüdischen Dialogs. –„Was Sie tun, entspricht der Botschaft meines Vaters, sich selbst gegenüber nicht gleichgültig zu sein“ – sagte Frau Prof. Heschel.

Rabbiner Abraham Skórka, der sich für den interreligiösen Dialog einsetzt und seit vielen Jahren mit Papst Franziskus befreundet ist, betonte, dass die KUL mit der Einrichtung des Heschel-Zentrums eine positive Antwort auf den Aufruf an Juden und Katholiken gibt, nämlich den Lauf der Geschichte zu ändern, und zwar durch die Öffnung für einen Dialog, der eine Zukunft voller gegenseitigen Verständnisses und Friedens und gegenseitiger Herzlichkeit ermöglicht.

Der lateinische Patriarch von Jerusalem, Erzbischof Pierbattista Pizzaballa, erinnerte daran, dass die Geschichte der christlich-jüdischen Beziehungen immer schwierig war, und dass deshalb der Dialog zwischen den brüderlichen Religionen besonders wertvoll ist. – „Der christlich-jüdische Dialog ist der erste und wichtigste Dialog, weil es ein Dialog mit unseren Wurzeln ist. Wir können keinen Zugang zur Lehre Jesu Christi finden, wenn wir uns seiner jüdischen Wurzeln nicht bewusst sind“ – sagte der Erzbischof.

Der Vorsitzende der Polnischen Bischofskonferenz, Erzbischof Stanisław Gądecki, betonte seinerseits, dass das Heschel-Zentrum der KUL die Umsetzung der Konzilserklärung „Nostra aetate“ und der von den folgenden Päpsten formulierten Lehre der Kirche sei. Er erinnerte auch an die Rolle des Patrons der Katholischen Universität Lublin – Papst Johannes Paul II. – als Vorbild für den katholisch-jüdischen Dialog. „Er war der erste Papst, der gemeinsam mit einem Rabbiner für den Frieden betete, der erste Papst, der eine Synagoge betrat und das deutsche Nazi-Konzentrationslager Auschwitz-Birkenau besuchte. Johannes Paul II. war der erste Papst, der an der Klagemauer betete und Gott um Vergebung und gegenseitige Brüderlichkeit bat“.

Während der Einweihungszeremonie, die mit der Nominierung des Vorstands des Abraham J. Heschel Zentrums für katholisch-jüdische Beziehungen der KUL und einem Auftritt von Kantor Symcha Keller endete, wurden auch das Ehrenkomitee und der Wissenschaftsrat des Zentrums vorgestellt. Dem Wissenschaftsrat und dem Ehrenkomitee der neu gegründeten Einrichtung gehören u.a. Rabbiner Prof. Abraham Skórka aus Argentinien, Rabbiner David Rosen – Direktor für interreligiöse Beziehungen des American Jewish Committee, Rabbiner Prof. Lawrence H. Schiffman – Professor an der New York University, Prof. Judith Olszowy-Schlanger – Professorin für hebräische und jüdische Studien an der Oxford University, Prof. Amy-Jill Levine – Professorin für neutestamentliche Studien E. Rhodes und Leona B. Carpenter an der Vanderbilt University Divinity School in Nashville, Prof. Glenda Abramson von der Oxford University, Erzbischof Pierbattista Pizzaballa – der lateinische Patriarch von Jerusalem, Prof. Dr. Sławomir Żurek – Direktor des Internationalen Zentrums zur Erforschung der Geschichte und des kulturellen Erbes der Juden Mittel- und Osteuropas und Prof. Yagil Limore von der Bar Ilan Universität in Tel Aviv.

Das Abraham J. Heschel Zentrum für katholisch-jüdische Beziehungen an der Katholischen Universität Lublin ist eine Wissenschafts- und Bildungseinrichtung, deren Mission darin besteht, katholisch-jüdische Beziehungen in Wissenschaft, Bildung und Kultur auf internationaler Ebene aufzubauen. Das Zentrum verbindet Forschungsarbeit, Gedenken an die Vergangenheit, Bildung und Einbeziehung junger Menschen sowie Gestaltung des sozialen Bewusstseins durch Einsatz moderner Medien in globaler Dimension.

«Урочисте відкриття Центру католицько-юдейських відносин ім. Авраама І. Гешеля при Люблінському католицькому університеті стало історичною подією, і я переконаний, що не лише для нашого університету», – наголосив ректор Люблінського католицького університету, о. проф. Мирослав Калиновський. «Фундаментальні принципи, на яких базується діяльність Центру, можна окреслити словами: Спільна Біблія – Спільне минуле – Спільне майбутнє. Ці принципи посилаються на спільне біблійне коріння, на спільну історію обох спільнот, а також на необхідність формування майбутнього, заснованого на діалозі та відкритості до багатокультурності», – зазначив ректор Люблінського католицького університету.

Яків Лівне, посол Ізраїлю в Польщі, написав у спеціальному листі до учасників церемонії: «Зосереджуючись на науковій та дослідницькій діяльності, Центр відкритий до питань, пов’язаних з історією, культурою та спадщиною євреїв, а також до питань польсько-єврейських відносин протягом століть, а також й сьогодні».

Донька патрона Центру – проф. Сюзанна Гешель, яка проводить дослідження в Дартмутському коледжі в США, нагадала про найважливіші ідеї свого батька, також щодо християнсько-єврейського діалогу. – «Те, що ви робите, відповідає посланню мого батька, не бути байдужим одне до одного», – наголосила проф. Гешель.

Рабин Авраам Скурка, який багато років дружить з Папою Франциском і працює на благо міжрелігійного діалогу, підкреслив, що Люблінський католицький університет, створивши Центр Гешеля, дав позитивну відповідь на заклик до юдеїв і католиків змінити хід історії, відкриваючись на діалог, створюючи можливість для майбутнього, повного взаєморозуміння, миру та доброти.

Латинський патріарх Єрусалиму архієпископ П’єрбаттіста Піццабалла нагадав, що історія християнсько-юдейських стосунків була складною, тому діалог між братніми релігіями є особливо цінним. – «Християнсько-юдейський діалог – це перший і найважливіший тип діалогу, адже це діалог із нашим корінням. Ми не можемо мати доступу до вчення Ісуса Христа, якщо не знаємо про його юдейське коріння», — сказав архієпископ.

Голова Конференції Єпископату Польщі архієпископ Станіслав Гандецький у свою чергу підкреслив, що Центр Гешеля при Люблінському Католицькому Університеті є втіленням соборної декларації «Nostra aetate» та вчення Церкви, висловленого наступними Папами. Він також нагадав про роль патрона Люблінського католицького університету Папи Івана Павла ІІ, який є прикладом для наслідування у католицько-юдейському діалозі. «Він був першим Папою, який молився разом з рабином за мир, першим Папою, який увійшов до синагоги та відвідав німецький нацистський концтабір Аушвіц-Біркенау. Іван Павло ІІ був першим Папою, який молився біля Стіни Плачу, просячи у Бога прощення та взаємного братерства».

Під час церемонії, яка завершилася призначенням членів Правління Центру католицько-юдейських відносин ім. Авраама І. Гешеля та виступом хазана Симхи Келлера, буде також представлено Почесний Комітет та Наукову Раду Центру. До складу Наукової Ради та Почесного Комітету новоствореної установи входять, серед інших рабин проф. Авраам Скурка з Аргентини, директор міжрелігійних контактів Американського єврейського комітету рабин Девід Розен, професор Нью-Йоркського університету рабин проф. Лоуренс Х. Шиффман, професор івриту та юдаїки Оксфордського університету, проф. Джудіт Ольшовий-Шлангер, професор вивчення Нового Заповіту Е. Родес і Леона Б. Карпентер зі Школи богослов’я Університету Вандербільта в Нашвіллі, проф. Емі-Джил Левін, проф.
