1. How to break the spiral of evil

Loving even one’s enemies is the only effective way to break the spiral of evil and hatred. This is what Jesus teaches us, and it is the distinguishing characteristic of Christians.

2. Keywords

Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.

Loving one’ s enemies – is actually God’s attitude toward man. It is God’s love for man who has betrayed Him through sin, turned away from Him, and is no friend of God. However, God is not discouraged. He gave his life for us and forgives our sins in the sacrament of reconciliation.

There are many Greek words that mean love. This gospel passage is about “agape” love, the love that has its source in God Himself. So, with His help we can love our enemies.

Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful (…) Forgive and you will be forgiven (…) For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.

That last sentence explains why it is not only necessary but also good to love one’s enemies. Even more so because in the prayer that Jesus Christ taught us, we say “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.”

3. Today

One of the best comments on this Gospel are the words of Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski: “The worth of our year depends on the extent to which we have been able to overcome resentment within ourselves, the extent to which we have been able to overcome human anger and wrath. One year’s worth corresponds to how much sorrow, suffering, and adversity we have spared people. The value of our year depends on how much heart, closeness, compassion, kindness, and comfort we have been able to show to people. Our year is worth as much as we were able to pay with good for the evil done to us.”

1. Cómo romper la espiral del mal

Amar incluso a los enemigos es el único modo eficaz de romper la espiral del mal y del odio. Esto es lo que nos enseña Jesús, y es la característica distintiva de los cristianos.

2. Palabras clave

Amen a sus enemigos, hagan el bien a los que los aborrecen, bendigan a quienes los maldicen y oren por quienes los difaman.

Amar a los enemigos – es en realidad la actitud de Dios hacia el hombre. Es el amor de Dios hacia el hombre que lo ha traicionado por el pecado, se ha alejado de Él y no es amigo de Dios. Sin embargo, Dios no se desanima. Dio su vida por nosotros y perdona nuestros pecados en el sacramento de la reconciliación.

Hay muchas palabras griegas que significan amor. Este pasaje del Evangelio trata del amor «agape», el amor que tiene su fuente en Dios mismo. Así, con su ayuda podemos amar a nuestros enemigos.

Sean misericordiosos, como su Padre es misericordioso (…) perdonen y serán perdonados (…) Porque con la misma medida con que midan, serán medidos.

Esta última frase explica por qué no sólo es necesario, sino también bueno, amar a los enemigos. Más aún porque en la oración que nos enseñó Jesucristo, decimos «perdona nuestras ofensas como nosotros perdonamos a los que nos ofenden».

3. Hoy

Uno de los mejores comentarios sobre este Evangelio son las palabras del cardenal Stefan Wyszyński: «El valor de nuestro año depende de la medida en que hayamos sido capaces de superar el resentimiento en nuestro interior, de la medida en que hayamos sido capaces de superar la ira y el enfado humanos. El valor de nuestro año corresponde a cuánto dolor, sufrimiento y adversidad hemos evitado a la gente. El valor de nuestro año depende de la cantidad de corazón, cercanía, compasión, bondad y consuelo que hayamos sido capaces de mostrar a la gente. Nuestro año vale tanto como hayamos sido capaces de pagar con el bien el mal que nos han hecho».
