1. Co-workers of the Gospel

Jesus leaves no illusions. Those who are saved are not those who merely enroll in a religious community, but those who strive to live the Gospel and be with Jesus.

2. Key words

Someone asked Jesus, “Lord, will only a few people be saved?”

At the time of Jesus, there was a belief that salvation applied only to the Chosen People. That’s why someone listening to Jesus’ teachings asked the question.

Jesus responds, “they will come from the east and the west, from the north and the south, and sit down at the table in the kingdom of God.” Not only members of the Chosen People, but all people, regardless of their origin and place of residence, are called to salvation. The open door is a symbol of salvation available to all.

“Strive to enter through the narrow gate.”

The Greek word “agonizo” used in the original text literally means to fight, to struggle, to compete, to desire to achieve something. Our striving is to be total, to the maximum. Like athletes in a competition, we are to give our best to achieve salvation.

Salvation is a gift. None of us has earned it. It is brought to us by Jesus, but he expects our commitment, our personal effort, “agonizo”. Such a struggle takes a cost, but it is worth it.

“Depart from me, all you evildoers!”

One can toil for God, for truth and righteousness, or, on the contrary, toil for sin and injustice. The latter are what the original Gospel text calls “ergates adikias” – workers of injustice.

The sign of accepting salvation is to do good works, to be a co-worker for truth, goodness and justice.

3. Today

Not everything has been done for us. The approach in faith that no matter what I would do, Jesus saved me anyway, so I don’t have to try is illusory and dangerous. God wants to give me salvation, but He wants my cooperation. St. Augustine said: “Work as if everything depended on you, but trust as if everything depended on God.”

1. Los colaboradores del Evangelio

Jesús no deja ninguna duda. El que se salva no es el que se limita a ser miembro de una comunidad religiosa, sino el que procura vivir el Evangelio y estar con Jesús.

2. Palabras clave

Alguien le preguntó a Jesús: “Señor, ¿es verdad que son pocos los que se salvan?”

En la época de Jesús, existía la creencia de que la salvación era sólo para el Pueblo Elegido. Por eso, alguien que escuchaba las enseñanzas de Jesús hizo esta pregunta.

Jesús dice: “Vendrán muchos del oriente y del poniente, del norte y del sur, y participarán en el banquete del Reino de Dios”. No sólo las personas del pueblo elegido, sino todos, independientemente de su origen o lugar de residencia, están llamados a la salvación. La puerta abierta es un símbolo de la salvación disponible para todos.

“Esfuércense en entrar por la puerta, que es angosta”

La palabra griega “agonizo” utilizada en el texto original significa literalmente luchar, esforzarse, competir, desear conseguir algo. Nuestro empeño debe ser pleno, máximo. Como los atletas en una competición, debemos dar lo mejor de nosotros mismos para lograr la salvación.

La salvación es un don. Ninguno de nosotros se lo merece. Nos lo trae Jesús, pero espera nuestro compromiso, nuestro esfuerzo personal – “agoniso”. Esta lucha tiene un coste, pero merece la pena.

“Apártense de mí todos ustedes los que hacen el mal”

Se puede esforzar por Dios, por la verdad y la justicia, o, por el contrario, trabajar por el pecado y la injusticia. Estos últimos son lo que el texto original del Evangelio llama “ergates adikias” – obreros de la injusticia.

La señal de aceptar la salvación es hacer buenas obras, ser colaborador de la verdad, la bondad y la justicia.

3. Hoy

No todo está hecho para nosotros. Es engañoso y peligroso adoptar el camino en la fe de que no importa lo que haría, Jesús me ha salvado de todos modos, así que no tengo que esforzarme. Dios quiere darme la salvación, pero también desea mi cooperación. San Agustín dijo: “Trabaja como si todo dependiera de ti, pero confía como si todo dependiera de Dios”.
