1 Jesus’ action

Today’s Gospel is Jesus’ farewell to his disciples before his ascension. This farewell, however, is only apparent. The disciples understood it, and they responded with joy and praise to God. Jesus is always with his disciples. Moreover, from this moment on His presence and work will not be limited to one place. Jesus is with us, his disciples, where we are, all over the world. How is Jesus with us now? How is he at work today?

2 Key Words

“Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day.”

Jesus is referring to the Scriptures, that is, the Word of God. The Scriptures actually speak of His passion and resurrection. Jesus is present in the Word of God. There we can meet Him because He is the Word. Benedict XVI says that each of us is capable of hearing the Word of God and responding to it (encyclical Verbum Dei, 22).

“Repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, will be preached in His name.”

Jesus brings forgiveness of sins to all. He wants to forgive us and wants us to be happy and free from sin. This is how Jesus is present and working very concretely today in our lives, if we only want it.

“And behold I am sending the promise of my Father upon you.”

The promise of the Father is the Holy Spirit. Jesus also calls Him the power from on high. Jesus Himself experienced the power of the Holy Spirit in His mission, and before His ascension He promised Him to us. The Holy Spirit empowers believers and transforms their hearts. He advises how to live in friendship with Jesus and how to proclaim Him to others.

“[Jesus] raised his hands, and blessed them.”

Jesus blessed his disciples before his ascension. This blessing gives them joy. Jesus’ blessing is still there for all who believe, for all times. I can ask Jesus for his blessing and be certain that I will receive it.

3 Today

Jerusalem tradition has it that Jesus, ascending into heaven, left his mark on a rock. On the Mount of Olives there a small chapel a stone with a footprint. It reminds us that Jesus is close to us, that he is present and at work. How do I encounter the Risen Jesus today? What signs of His presence are especially important to me?

1. La acción de Jesús

El Evangelio de hoy es la despedida de Jesús con sus discípulos antes de su ascensión. Sin embargo, esta despedida es sólo aparente. Los discípulos lo entienden porque reaccionan con alegría y alabanza a Dios. Jesús está siempre con sus discípulos. Además, a partir de este momento su presencia y acción no se limitarán a un solo lugar. Jesús está con nosotros, sus discípulos, dondequiera que estemos, en todo el mundo. ¿Cómo está Jesús con nosotros ahora? ¿Cómo actúa?

2. Palabras clave

«Está escrito que el Mesías tenía que padecer y había de resucitar de entre los muertos al tercer día.»

Jesús se refiere a las Escrituras, la Palabra de Dios. Son las Escrituras las que hablan de su pasión y resurrección. Jesús está presente en la Palabra de Dios. Allí podemos encontrarnos con Él, porque Él es la Palabra. Benedicto XVI dice que cada uno de nosotros es capaz de escuchar la Palabra de Dios y responder a ella (encíclica Verbum Dei, 22).

«…en su nombre se había de predicar […] la necesidad de volverse a Dios para el perdón de los pecados.»

Jesús trae el perdón de los pecados a todos. Él quiere perdonarnos y quiere que seamos felices y estemos libres de pecado. De este modo, Jesús está presente y actúa muy concretamente hoy en nuestras vidas, si así queremos.

«Aguarden aquí a que se cumpla la promesa de mi Padre… ».

La promesa del Padre es el Espíritu Santo. Jesús también lo llama poder de lo alto. Jesús mismo experimentó el poder del Espíritu Santo en su misión, y antes de su ascensión nos lo prometió. El Espíritu Santo da poder a los creyentes y transforma sus corazones. Les indica cómo vivir en amistad con Jesús y cómo predicarlo a los demás.

«[Jesús] levantando las manos, los bendijo».

Jesús bendijo a sus discípulos antes de su ascensión. Esta bendición les da alegría. La bendición de Jesús es para todos los que creyeron, para todos los tiempos. Puedo pedirle a Jesús su bendición y estar seguro de que la recibiré.

3. Hoy

La tradición de Jerusalén dice que Jesús, al ascender al cielo, dejó una huella en una roca. En el Monte de los Olivos de Jerusalén, una pequeña capilla esconde una piedra con una huella de pie. Nos recuerda que Jesús está cerca de nosotros, que está presente y activo. ¿Cómo me encuentro hoy con Jesús resucitado? ¿Qué signos de su presencia son especialmente importantes para mí?
