On Friday, January 21, we invite you to the next lecture of the “JP2 Lectures” series, organized by the St. John Paul II Institute of Culture at the Angelicum, which will be given by Professor Andrea Riccardi (La Terza Università degli Studi di Roma).

Venerdì 21 gennaio vi invitiamo alla prossima conferenza del Ciclo di Lezioni GP2 (JP2 Lectures) 2021-22, organizzata dall’Istituto di Cultura San Giovanni Paolo II dell’Angelicum, che sarà tenuta dal professor Andrea Riccardi (La Terza Università degli Studi di Roma).
La conferenza, intitolata “Giovanni Paolo II: eccezione o illusione?”, avrà inizio alle ore 10.30 nell’Aula 11 dell’Angelicum (indirizzo: Largo Angelicum, 1, 00184 Roma).
Was the pontificate of John Paul II an illusion or an exception in the light of the decline of Christianity between the 20th and 21st centuries?
The question concerns above all the charismatic aspects of Wojtyła’s papacy. The global world likes to identify the Church with the person of the pope and impose a charismatic fulfillment of this role.
The Church of John Paul II, in its various dimensions, was a relevant protagonist in the history of its time, as in the case of the interreligious prayer in Assisi in 1986 or in the transformation in Poland and Eastern Europe. John Paul II began his pontificate in 1978 with an announcement: Do not be afraid! Fear is still one of the most prevalent feelings around the world. It was a direct message to the tired Western Catholicism, intimidated by the successes of secularization. But also to Eastern Catholicism, humiliated by Soviet domination.
It was a geopolitical vision, driven by a mystical passion. Wojtyła did not accept the Cold War division of the world. His pontificate was a time of Church extroversion. In this vision, Europe occupied a central place because, moving out of the realm of fear, it set in motion profound religious and social processes, fostering a new culture in the light of religious experience.
John Paul II gathered crowds even in countries where Christianity was exhausted. He believed in the value of dialogue and encounter, of coexistence between religions and different ethnic-cultural identities. He fought for a peaceful transition from the Cold War, showing “strength of spirit”.
We should interpret his figure without isolating him from the history of the Church and understand the complex lesson of his pontificate regarding: culture, messianism, faith as a force of change for Christians, the charismatic dimension of the Church with popular and Marian devotion, but also with new communities and movements. He waited and worked to make the Jubilee of 2000 a great opportunity for the Church’s self-reform, to “make the Church the home and the school of communion”.
Professor Andrea Riccardi – born 1950, in Rome. Italian historian, scholar and politician. He is Professor of Contemporary History at La Terza University in Rome and has also taught at the University of Bari. A number of universities have granted him honorary degrees in recognition of his historical and cultural merits. Andrea Riccardi is known internationally for having founded, in 1968, the Community of Sant’Egidio. In the years 2011-2013 he served as Minister for International Cooperation in the cabinet of the Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti.

Il pontificato di Giovanni Paolo II è stato un’illusione o un’eccezione nel declino del cristianesimo tra XX e XXI secolo?
L’osservazione riguarda soprattutto il ruolo carismatico del papato di Wojtyla. Di fatto, il mondo globale favorisce la personalizzazione della Chiesa nella figura del papa e impone un esercizio carismatico del ruolo.
La Chiesa di Giovanni Paolo II, nelle sue varie dimensioni è stata protagonista rilevante della storia del suo tempo, come con la preghiera interreligiosa di Assisi nel 1986 o nella vicenda di cambiamento della Polonia e dell’Est europeo. Giovanni Paolo II ha esordito nel 1978 con un annuncio: non abbiate paura! La paura è ancora uno dei sentimenti più diffusi nel tempo globale. È stato un messaggio diretto allo stanco cattolicesimo occidentale, intimidito dalla secolarizzazione vincente. Ma anche a quello orientale, umiliato dalla dominazione sovietica.
La sua era una visione geopolitica, guidata da una passione mistica. Wojtyla non accettava la divisione del mondo della guerra fredda. Il suo pontificato è stato un tempo di estroversione della Chiesa. In questa visione, l’Europa era centrale, perché, uscendo dal dominio della paura, avrebbe messo in moto profondi processi religiosi e sociali, favorendo una nuova cultura alla luce dell’esperienza religiosa.
Giovanni Paolo II radunava le folle anche nei paesi dalla cristianità più stanca. Credeva al valore del dialogo e dell’incontro, della convivenza tra religioni e diverse identità etnico-culturali. Ha lottato per la transizione pacifica dalla guerra fredda, mostrando la “forza dello spirito”.
Bisogna leggerne la figura senza isolarlo dalle vicende della Chiesa e comprendere la lezione complessa di un pontificato: cultura, messianismo, fede come forza di cambiamento dei cristiani, dimensione carismatica della Chiesa con la pietà popolare e mariana, ma anche con le nuove comunità e i movimenti. Ha atteso e lavorato perché il Giubileo del 2000 divenisse una grande occasione di autoriforma della Chiesa, per poter “fare della Chiesa, la casa e la scuola della comunione”.
Il Professor Andrea Riccardi – nato nel 1950 a Roma. Storico, professore e politico italiano. È professore di storia contemporanea all’Università La Terza di Roma e ha insegnato anche all’Università di Bari. Diverse università gli hanno riconosciuto lauree honoris causa per i suoi meriti storici e culturali. Andrea Riccardi è noto a livello internazionale per aver fondato, nel 1968, la Comunità di Sant’Egidio. Negli anni 2011-2013 è stato Ministro della Cooperazione Internazionale nel gabinetto del Primo Ministro italiano Mario Monti.
