1. Manual for everyone

In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives so much concrete advice and guidance to those who preach the Good News that it safely be called a manual, which applies to every single Christian.

2. Key words

The Lord appointed seventy-two others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit.

The number of 72 disciples has a symbolic meaning. In ancient times it was believed that there were 72 nations in the world. This means that Jesus sends disciples to everyone without exception.

Jesus sends them by twos because the preaching of the Gospel is based on the word of at least two witnesses. Moreover, Jesus does not want the Good News to be preached alone. Christ wants those preaching the Gospel to support each other. Each of us goes through a rough patch, at which time the other person helps out.

The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest
to send out laborers for his harvest.

In the tradition of the Church, these words are read as Jesus’ encouragement to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious orders, as well as for missionary vocations. But every Christian is called to be a missionary in his or her community.

Go on your way!

Get off the couch and put on your trekking shoes! Jesus encourages this and Pope Francis reminds everyone of it. It is crucial that we embark on our way and reach out to people, rather than just sit or stand.

I am sending you like lambs among wolves.

Paradoxically, it is a powerful image of the disciples’ safety, as lambs belong to the Lord. Furthermore, preachers of the Good News cannot be like wolves and use violence or aggression.

Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way.

Such an attitude strengthens people’s trust in God’s Providence, which attends to their material needs. Having no sandals on one’s feet makes one more like the servants who walked barefoot. Jesus advises against greeting others, because in His time greetings took a great deal of time, and there is no time to waste on courtesies.

3. Today

Jesus’ words are addressed to all of us, not just to priests and religious sisters. By virtue of baptism, each of us is a disciple of Jesus, whom He sends to carry smiles, goodness, faith, hope, and love to others. This is precisely the Gospel in practice.

1. Un manual para todos

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús da tantos consejos e indicaciones concretas para los que predican la Buena Nueva que podría llamarse un manual. Esto se aplica a todos los cristianos.

2. Palabras clave

«(…) Jesús designó a otros setenta y dos discípulos y los mandó por delante, de dos en dos, a todos los pueblos y lugares a donde pensaba ir (…)»

El número de 72 discípulos tiene un significado simbólico. En la antigüedad se pensaba que había 72 naciones en el mundo. Esto significa que Jesús les mandó a todos sin excepción.

Jesús manda siempre de dos en dos, porque la predicción del Evangelio se basa en la palabra de al menos dos testigos. Además, Jesús no quiere que la Buena Nueva se predique por una sola persona. Cristo también quiere que los que predican el Evangelio se apoyen mutuamente. Cada uno de nosotros tiene días malos. Entonces la otra persona ayuda y viceversa.

«La cosecha es mucha y los trabajadores pocos. Rueguen, por lo tanto, al dueño de la mies que envíe trabajadores a sus campos. »

En la tradición de la Iglesia, estas palabras se leen como el incentivo de Jesús para rezar por las vocaciones al sacerdocio y a las órdenes religiosas, y por las vocaciones misioneras. Pero todo cristiano está llamado a ser misionero en su entorno.

«Pónganse en camino»

«Hay que animarse a cambiar el sofá por un par de zapatos que te ayuden a caminar por caminos nunca soñados y menos pensados, por caminos que abran nuevos horizontes.» Esto es lo que Jesús anima y el Papa Francisco nos recuerda que debemos hacer. Hay que ir, salir a la gente, no sentarse ni quedarse parado.

«(…) yo los envío como corderos en medio de lobos.»

Paradójicamente, esta es una imagen fuerte de la seguridad de los discípulos, porque las ovejas pertenecen al Señor Jesús. Además, los que proclaman la Buena Nueva no deben volverse como lobos y utilizar la fuerza o la agresión.

«No lleven ni dinero, ni morral, ni sandalias y no se detengan a saludar a nadie por el camino. »

Esta actitud refuerza la confianza de los discipulos en la providencia de Dios, que se ocupa de sus necesidades materiales. El hecho de no llevar sandalias en los pies les hace parecerse a los siervos que andaban descalzos. Jesús dice que no saluden, porque en su época los saludos llevaban mucho tiempo, y no hay tiempo para perder en cortesías.

3. Hoy

Las palabras de Jesús se dirigen a todos nosotros, no sólo a los sacerdotes y monjas. En virtud del bautismo, cada uno de nosotros es un discípulo de Jesús que Él envía a llevar sonrisas, bondad, fe, esperanza y amor a la gente. Y esto es el Evangelio puesto en práctica.
