1. A greater miracle than the multiplication of the loaves

The description of the multiplication of bread is very touching. Those who have followed Jesus to the place of his prayer, in the wilderness, and have listened to Jesus’ words all day, do not have to leave hungry in the evening. Jesus gives them all bread and fish. Now this is a miracle, but this miracle is only a foreshadowing of the greatest miracle in the history of the world. Jesus wants to give us so much more. He wants to give us Himself.

2. Keywords

Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, Jesus said the blessing over them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd.

Jesus looks up to heaven, turning to the Father. He blesses and breaks the bread, and the disciples distribute it to everyone. The same is true of the Eucharist – the greatest of miracles. Jesus Himself is the bread. The Father gives us the Son in the mystery of “breaking the bread”: the Cross, the Death and Resurrection of Jesus.

This miracle lasts all the time and will last forever until the end of the world. Every baptised person has the opportunity to be so close to Jesus that he becomes physically present in his body.

They all ate and were satisfied

You can choose not to come to Jesus and not let yourself be fed. It is possible to pretend that there is no hunger for God within us. You can refuse to receive Jesus in the Eucharist, even when you are at Mass. But those who do come to Jesus, receive a gift unimaginable: spiritual and physical union with Jesus himself. Everyone can satiate their spiritual hunger and draw strength for the rest of their lives. Just like the people in the Gospel account who, out of the wilderness, went on home to others. They probably talked about what had happened.

The Eucharist is such a beautiful miracle that we cannot keep it to ourselves. That is why, on the feast of Corpus Christi, we proclaim what happens: that Jesus is present in the Eucharist, in every church, and he is present in us when we receive him in Holy Communion. We share this joy as we take to the streets in processions with Jesus. The name of today’s feast, Corpus Christi, just means Body of Christ. It is a joyful celebration of Christ’s presence among us.

3. Today

Saint Faustina, who had the gift of seeing and talking to Jesus, said that Jesus is very sad when people receive Him like ordinary bread, with no faith, and not as it really is – as the Body of Christ. How do I receive Jesus in Holy Communion? How do I express my gratitude to God for this gift? How do I share this joy with others?

1. Un milagro mayor que la multiplicación del pan

La descripción de la multiplicación del pan es conmovedora. Los que han seguido a Jesús al lugar de su oración, al lugar solitario, y han escuchado las palabras de Jesús durante todo el día, no tienen que irse con hambre por la noche. Jesús les da a todos pan y pescado. Esto es un milagro, pero este milagro es sólo el preludio del mayor milagro de la historia del mundo. Jesús quiere darnos mucho más. Quiere darnos a Él mismo.

2. Palabras clave

«(…) [Jesús] y levantando su mirada al cielo, pronunció sobre ellos una oración de acción de gracias, los partió y los fue dando a los discípulos para que ellos los distribuyeran entre la gente.»

Jesús mira al cielo, dirigiéndose al Padre. Él bendice y parte el pan, y los discípulos lo distribuyen a todos. También es así la Eucaristía, el mayor de los milagros. El pan es el mismo Jesús. El Padre nos da al Hijo en el misterio de partir el pan.

Este milagro continúa todo el tiempo y continuará siempre, hasta el fin del mundo. Cada persona bautizada tiene la oportunidad de estar tan cerca de Jesús que éste se hace físicamente presente en su cuerpo.

«Comieron todos y se saciaron (…). »

Es posible no venir a Jesús y dejarse alimentar. Es posible pretender que no haya hambre de Dios en nuestro interior. Uno puede negarse a recibir a Jesús en la Eucaristía, incluso estando en misa. Pero los que vienen reciben un regalo inimaginable: la unidad espiritual y física con el propio Jesús. Todos pueden saciar su hambre espiritual y sacar fuerzas para el viaje de la vida que tienen por delante. Al igual que las personas del evangelio que, al salir del lugar solitario, siguieron su camino a casa, a los demás. Probablemente contaban lo que había pasado.

La Eucaristía es un milagro tan hermoso que no podemos guardarlo para nosotros. Por eso, en la solemnidad del Corpus Christi, proclamamos lo que sucede: que Jesús está presente en la Eucaristía, en todas las iglesias, y está presente en nosotros cuando lo recibimos en la Santa Comunión. Compartimos esta alegría al salir a la calle en procesión con Jesús. El nombre de la solemnidad de hoy, Corpus Christi, significa precisamente Cuerpo de Cristo. Es una alegre celebración de la presencia de Cristo entre nosotros.

3. Hoy

Santa Faustina, que tenía el don de ver y hablar con Jesús, nos transmitió que Jesús se entristece mucho cuando la gente lo recibe como pan corriente, sin fe, y no como lo que realmente es: como el Cuerpo de Cristo. ¿Cómo se recibe a Jesús en la Santa Comunión? ¿Cómo expreso mi gratitud a Dios por este don? ¿Cómo puedo compartir esta alegría con los demás?
