The assembly of the Podlaskie Region in eastern Poland, united in defense of Saint John Paul II. The councilors representing the region adopted a unanimous stance expressing respect for the Polish Pope and opposed the falsification of his biography.

The position of the assembly expresses deep respect for the Holy Father. The councilors pay tribute to him and thank him for his efforts as “Pilgrim of Peace”. They also point out that the papal transformation of human hearts and mission to the poor and persecuted was accompanied by “calling for democratic and freedom changes” and “constant solicitation” for peace in the world.

“In Podlaskie Region, so far similar positions have been taken by councilors of the Białystok county and the association of Polish counties of the Podlaskie Region, following in the footsteps of my colleagues, I thought that it is worth taking a position of the Assembly on this matter” – says Sebastian Łukaszewicz from the Law and Justice club of councilors, chairman of the Education Committee, Culture, Tourism and Sports.

We are excited that Poland can be proud of this outstanding spiritual leader, a great humanist and intellectual, a man of great heart – proclaims the position of the Podlaskie Region Assembly. The councilors also emphasized that St. John Paul II not only spoke about important matters, but also contributed to positive changes.
It was a driving voice, (...) inspiring development, especially moral development, in the name of solidarity, truth and justice, inscribed in humanity as an eternal law – we read in the stance.

At the same time, the regional Assembly expressed opposition to the repeated from a certain date of “acts of tarnishing the good name of John Paul II as well as falsifying his biography and lying on the truth about his activities”. “We strongly disagree with pointing to blame where there is no fault, burding him with errors and blame of others, on the application of collective responsibility.” The councilors supported in-depth historical research and a substantive assessment of the facts. At the same time, they emphasized that there is no consent to “ideological rewriting of history without new facts and real circumstances”.

“During the consultations that I conducted with the clubs, no comments were made. When the vote on adopting the position took place, the chairman suggested that we, as councilors, should accept it by acclamation. This unanimity of the councilors is especially pleasing, because it shows that in the Podlaskie Region, among councilors from various sides of the political scene, there is no consent to slander St. Jana Pawła II”- emphasizes the councilor Sebastian Łukaszewicz.

The position of the Regional Assembly also recalled the relationships of St. John Paul II with Podlasie. As emphasized, the region has many material traces of the pope’s presence, especially in the northern part, from the period before the pontificate. “He was also in our region as pope, visiting Białystok, Łomża, Suwałki region, Drohiczyn” – we read in the position.

Podlasie councilors noted that the Polish nation “will never forget the great merits of its Great Countryman”. Councilor Sebastian Łukaszewicz adds that the words of St. John Paul II are an inspiration for many, becoming a motivation and often a signpost. He himself recalls the famous message of the Pope, delivered on June 12, 1987 in Gdańsk.”Each of you, young friends, also finds in your life some Westerplatte, some dimension of tasks that must be undertaken and fulfilled, some righteous cause that cannot fail to fight for, some obligation, duty that cannot be avoided, cannot be deserted. Finally, some order of truths and values to be upheld and defended, such as Westerplatte. To maintain and defend, in oneself and around oneself, defend for oneself and for others, “the Polish Pope said then, referring to the heroic defense of the peninsula by Polish soldiers attacked by the Germans. The storming of Westerplatte on September 1, 1939 was the first act of World War II.
