Polish Episcopate’s President to Patriarch Cyril: “I ask you, Brother, to appeal to Vladimir Putin” (EN, ES, IT, DE, UA)

“…I ask you, Brother, to appeal to Vladimir Putin to stop the senseless warfare against the Ukrainian people, in which innocent people are being killed and suffering is affecting not only soldiers but civilians as well—especially women and children,” writes Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki, the President of the Polish Episcopate, to Patriarch Cyril. He also encourages the Patriarch to call for the withdrawal of the troops from Ukraine and to urge Russian soldiers not to participate in the criminal war and return home.

“…Le pido, hermano, que haga un llamamiento a Vladimir Putin para que detenga esta guerra sin sentido contra el pueblo ucraniano, en la que se está matando a personas inocentes y el sufrimiento está afectando no sólo a los soldados, sino también a los civiles, especialmente a las mujeres y los niños”, escribe el arzobispo Stanisław Gądecki, presidente del episcopado polaco, al patriarca Kirill. También anima al Patriarca a pedir la retirada de las tropas de Ucrania y a instar a los soldados rusos a no participar en la guerra criminal y a regresar a casa.

„…Ich bitte Sie, Bruder, Bruder, an Wladimir Putin zu appellieren, den sinnlosen Krieg gegen das ukrainische Volk zu beenden, in dem unschuldige Menschen getötet werden und in dem nicht nur Soldaten, sondern auch Zivilisten – insbesondere Frauen und Kinder – leiden“, schreibt Erzbischof Stanisław Gądecki, der Vorsitzende des polnischen Episkopats, an Patriarch Kirill. Er ermutigt den Patriarchen auch, den Rückzug der Truppen aus der Ukraine zu fordern und die russischen Soldaten aufzufordern, sich nicht an dem verbrecherischen Krieg zu beteiligen und nach Hause zurückzukehren.

Просить також Патріарха закликати до виведення військ з України, а російських солдатів – не брати участі у війні та повернутися додому.

In his message to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia on March 2^nd, Archbishop Gądecki stresses that he treats the misfortune of the Russian and Ukrainian nations as his own and prays for peace. “However, so that our prayer may not be considered an expression of hypocrisy, it must be accompanied by actions. I believe, Your Holiness, that you are a man of peace,” writes Archbishop Gądecki. – “Therefore, I ask you, Brother, to appeal to Vladimir Putin to stop the senseless warfare against the Ukrainian people, in which innocent people are being killed and suffering is affecting not only soldiers but civilians as well—especially women and children,” adds the president of the Polish Bishops’ Conference, stating that only one man can, by one word, relieve the suffering of thousands of people, that man is Vladimir Putin. “. I ask you in the most humbly to call for the withdrawal of the Russian troops from the sovereign state that is Ukraine.”

The author of the message also writes that no reason justifies the invasion of an independent country, bombing residential areas, schools, and kindergartens. Every war is a disaster for humanity and this war, because of the proximity of two nations with Christian roots, is senseless.

Archbishop Gądecki also asks his addressee to appeal to Russian soldiers not to participate in an unjust war, not to follow orders that lead to war crimes. “Refusing to follow orders in such a situation is a moral obligation. The time will come to settle these crimes, including before the international courts,” he stresses and recalls that even if someone manages to escape human justice, he will not escape the tribunal of Christ. And again, he asks to urge the soldiers to return home “without staining their hands with innocent blood.”

Finally, Archbishop Gądecki informs Patriarch Kirill that on the day the letter was written, in response to Pope Francis’ appeal, the faithful in Poland were fasting and praying for the establishment of a just peace in Ukraine, as this is a spiritual weapon at the disposal of the Church. He urges Patriarch Kirill to call on all Orthodox Christians in Russia to engage in similar spiritual work, for prayer and fasting change a person’s heart.

Patriarch Kirill did not deliver his message regarding the attack on Ukraine until the evening of the day of the invasion, February 24^th. He called it a “current event,” urged “the parties in conflict” to do everything possible to avoid civilian casualties and called for prayer. He did not use the words “war,” “invasion,” or “assault.”

The only Orthodox hierarch who condemned the attack on Ukraine was Metropolitan Onufry, head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate, who in his message, a few hours before Kirill, called on his compatriots to defend themselves, to show solidarity and to fast, calling the war “a repetition of the sin of Cain, who out of envy killed his own brother.” For, “this war has no justification either with God or with men.”

Your Holiness,

I heartily thank you for the words conveyed in the letter of Metropolitan Hilarion yesterday. I share the view of Your Holiness that hostility towards any nation is always unacceptable. We are all brothers, which is why we perceive every misfortune of the Ukrainian or Russian people as our own. Therefore, we wholeheartedly pray for peace in Ukraine.

However, so that our prayer may not be considered an expression of hypocrisy, it must be accompanied by actions. I believe, Your Holiness, that you are a man of peace. Our Lord, Jesus Christ taught: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” (Matt. 5:9). Therefore, I ask you, Brother, to appeal to Vladimir Putin to stop the senseless warfare against the Ukrainian people, in which innocent people are being killed and suffering is affecting not only soldiers but civilians as well—especially women and children. One man can stop the suffering of thousands of people with one word—that man is the President of the Russian Federation. I ask you in the most humbly to call for the withdrawal of the Russian troops from the sovereign state that is Ukraine.

No reason, no rationale can ever justify the decision to launch a military invasion of an independent country, bombing residential areas, schools, or kindergartens. War is always a defeat for humanity. This war—as I wrote in the previous letter—is even more senseless because of the proximity of the two nations and their Christian roots. Is it permissible to destroy the cradle of Christianity on Slavic soil, the place where Rus was baptized?

I also ask you to appeal to Russian soldiers not to take part in this unjust war, to refuse to carry out orders which, as we have already seen, lead to many war crimes. Refusing to follow orders in such a situation is a moral obligation. The time will come to settle these crimes, including before the international courts. However, even if someone manages to avoid this human justice, there is a tribunal that cannot be avoided. “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive good or evil, according to what he has done in the body” (2 Cor. 5:10).

I believe that many of the Russians sent to war are noble men. “We don’t know who to shoot at; they all look like us…” said one of your soldiers. So, I ask you to appeal to them to go home as soon as possible without staining their hands with innocent blood.

As disciples of Christ, we know that spiritual weapons are the main tool of warfare available to the Church. “This kind of evil spirit is cast out only by prayer and fasting,” we read in St. Matthew (Mt 17:21; Mk 9:29). In Poland, responding to Pope Francis’ appeal, today we have declared a day of prayer and fasting for the establishment of a just peace in Ukraine. I ask you, Brother, to call on all Orthodox brothers and sisters in Russia to engage in similar spiritual work. I believe that the Lord God will not remain indifferent to our prayers and sacrifices. I believe that fasting and prayer change a person’s heart.

En su mensaje al Patriarca de Moscú y toda Rusia del 2 de marzo, el arzobispo Gądecki subraya que trata la desgracia de las naciones rusa y ucraniana como propia y reza por la paz. “Sin embargo, para que nuestra oración no sea considerada una expresión de hipocresía, debe ir acompañada de acciones. Creo, Su Santidad, que usted es un hombre de paz”, escribe Monseñor Gądecki. – “Por lo tanto, le pido, hermano, que haga un llamamiento a Vladimir Putin para que detenga esta guerra sin sentido contra el pueblo ucraniano, en la que se está matando a personas inocentes y el sufrimiento está afectando no sólo a los soldados, sino también a los civiles, especialmente a las mujeres y los niños”, añade el presidente de la Conferencia Episcopal Polaca, afirmando que sólo un hombre puede, con una palabra, aliviar el sufrimiento de miles de personas, ese hombre es Vladimir Putin. “Le ruego con la mayor humildad que pida la retirada de las tropas rusas del Estado soberano que es Ucrania”.

El autor del mensaje también escribe que ninguna razón justifica la invasión de un país independiente, bombardeando zonas residenciales, escuelas y guarderías. Toda guerra es un desastre para la humanidad y esta guerra, por la proximidad de dos naciones con raíces cristianas, no tiene sentido.

Monseñor Gądecki también pide a su destinatario que haga un llamamiento a los soldados rusos para que no participen en una guerra injusta, para que no sigan órdenes que conducen a crímenes de guerra. “Negarse a cumplir órdenes en una situación así es una obligación moral. Ya llegará el momento de dirimir estos crímenes, incluso ante los tribunales internacionales”, subraya y recuerda que, aunque alguien consiga escapar a la justicia humana, no escapará al tribunal de Cristo. Y vuelve a pedir que se inste a los soldados a volver a casa “sin manchar sus manos con sangre inocente”.

Por último, Monseñor Gądecki informa al patriarca Kirill de que el día en que se escribió la carta, en respuesta al llamamiento del papa Francisco, los fieles de Polonia estaban ayunando y rezando por el establecimiento de una paz justa en Ucrania: se trata de un arma espiritual a disposición de la Iglesia. Insta al Patriarca Kirill a que llame a todos los cristianos ortodoxos de Rusia a realizar una labor espiritual similar, ya que la oración y el ayuno cambian el corazón de las personas.

El Patriarca Kirill no pronunció su mensaje sobre el ataque a Ucrania hasta la noche del día de la invasión, el 24 de febrero. Lo calificó de “acontecimiento actual”, instó a “las partes en conflicto” a hacer todo lo posible para evitar víctimas civiles e hizo un llamamiento a la oración. No utilizó las palabras “guerra”, “invasión” o “asalto”.

El único jerarca ortodoxo que condenó el ataque a Ucrania fue el metropolita Onufry, jefe de la Iglesia Ortodoxa Ucraniana del Patriarcado de Moscú, que, en su mensaje, unas horas antes que Kirill, llamó a sus compatriotas a defenderse, a ser solidarios y a ayunar, calificando la guerra de “repetición del pecado de Caín, que por envidia mató a su propio hermano”. Porque “esta guerra no tiene justificación ni ante Dios ni ante los hombres”.

Le agradezco de corazón las palabras transmitidas en la carta del Metropolitano Hilarión de ayer. Comparto la opinión de Su Santidad de que la hostilidad hacia cualquier nación es siempre inaceptable. Todos somos hermanos, por lo que percibimos cada desgracia del pueblo ucraniano o ruso como propia. Por ello, rezamos de todo corazón por la paz en Ucrania.

Sin embargo, para que nuestra oración no sea considerada una expresión de hipocresía, debe ir acompañada de acciones. Creo, Su Santidad, que usted es un hombre de paz. Nuestro Señor, Jesucristo enseñó: “Felices los que trabajan por la paz, porque serán llamados hijos de Dios” (Mt 5,9). Por lo tanto, le pido, hermano, que haga un llamamiento a Vladimir Putin para que detenga esta guerra sin sentido contra el pueblo ucraniano, en la que se está matando a personas inocentes y el sufrimiento está afectando no sólo a los soldados, sino también a los civiles, especialmente a las mujeres y los niños. Un hombre puede detener el sufrimiento de miles de personas con una sola palabra: ese hombre es el presidente de la Federación Rusa. Le ruego con la mayor humildad que pida la retirada de las tropas rusas del Estado soberano que es Ucrania.

Ninguna razón, ningún razonamiento puede justificar jamás la decisión de lanzar una invasión militar de un país independiente, bombardeando zonas residenciales, escuelas o jardines de infancia. La guerra es siempre una derrota para la humanidad. Esta guerra -como escribí en la carta anterior- es aún más insensata debido a la proximidad de las dos naciones y a sus raíces cristianas. ¿Es admisible destruir la cuna del cristianismo en suelo eslavo, el lugar donde se bautizó Rus?

También le pido que haga un llamamiento a los soldados rusos para que no participen en esta guerra injusta, para que se nieguen a cumplir órdenes que -como ya hemos visto- conducen a muchos crímenes de guerra. Negarse a cumplir órdenes en una situación así es una obligación moral. Ya llegará el momento de dirimir estos crímenes, incluso ante los tribunales internacionales. Sin embargo, si alguien consigue evitar esta justicia humana, hay un tribunal que no se puede evitar. “Porque todos debemos comparecer ante el tribunal de Cristo, para que cada uno reciba, de acuerdo con sus obras buenas o malas, lo que mereció durante su vida mortal” (2 Co 5,10).

Creo que muchos de los rusos enviados a la guerra son hombres nobles. “No sabemos a quién disparar; todos se parecen a nosotros…”, dijo uno de sus soldados. Así que le ruego que les pida que vuelvan a casa lo antes posible sin manchar sus manos con sangre inocente.

Como discípulos de Cristo, sabemos que las armas espirituales son la principal herramienta de guerra de que dispone la Iglesia. “Esta clase de espíritus malignos sólo se expulsan con la oración y el ayuno”, leemos en San Mateo (Mt 17,21; Mc 9,29). En Polonia, respondiendo al llamamiento del Papa Francisco, hoy hemos declarado una jornada de oración y ayuno por el establecimiento de una paz justa en Ucrania. Le pido, hermano, que llame a todos los hermanos y hermanas ortodoxos de Rusia a realizar una labor espiritual similar. Creo que el Señor Dios no permanecerá indiferente a nuestras oraciones y sacrificios. Creo que el ayuno y la oración cambian el corazón de una persona.

Nella sua missiva, indirizzata il 2 marzo al Patriarca di Mosca e di tutte le Russie, l’Arcivescovo Gądecki ha sottolineato che considera la sventura dei popoli russi e ucraini come proprie e che prega per la pace. “Affinché, però, la nostra preghiera non sia ritenuta una espressione ipocrita, essa deve essere accompagnata dai fatti. Credo che Vostra Santità sia un uomo di pace – ha scritto l’Arcivescovo Gądecki. – “Per questo Ti prego, Fratello, di fare appello a Vladimir Putin, affinché termini l’insensata lotta col popolo ucraino, nella quale stanno morendo persone innocenti, e la sofferenza non riguarda solo i militari, ma anche le persone civili – soprattutto donne e bambini” – ha aggiungo il Presidente dell’Episcopato Polacco che afferma che un uomo solo può con una sola parola fermare la sofferenza di migliaia di persone – e questo è Vladimir Putin. “Ti prego, il più umilmente possibile di fare un appello al ritiro dell’esercito russo da uno stato sovrano quale è l’Ucraina”.

L’autore della missiva ha scritto anche nessun motivo giustifica l’invasione in un Paese indipendente, il bombardamento di complessi residenziali, di scuole o asili. La guerra è sempre una sconfitta dell’umanità e questa guerra, a causa della vicinanza di due popoli di radici cristiane è priva di senso.

L’Arcivescovo Gądecki ha chiesto anche al suo Destinatario di fare appello ai soldati russi, affinché non partecipino a questa ingiusta guerra, affinché non eseguano gli ordini, i cui esiti sono crimini di guerra. “Il rifiuto di obbedire agli ordini in questa situazione è un obbligo morale. Verrà il momento di regolare i conti di questi reati, anche di fronte a tribunali internazionali” – ha sottolineato e ha ricordato che anche se anche qualcuno riuscisse ad evitare questa giustizia umana, non eviterà il tribunale di Cristo. Di nuovo ha chiesto di rivolgere un appello ai militari affinché tornino a casa “senza macchiare le proprie mani di sangue innocente”.

Al termine l’Arcivescovo Gądecki ha informato il patriarca Kiril che, nel giorno in cui ha scritto la lettera, in risposta ad un appello di Papa Francesco, in Polonia si stanno facendo digiuni e preghiere perché si stabilisca una pace giusta in Ucraina, in quanto questa è l’arma spirituale di cui dispone la Chiesa. Ha fatto appello affinché il patriarca Kiril inviti tutti gli ortodossi in Russia ad intraprendere una simile azione spirituale perché la preghiera e il digiuno cambino il cuore dell’uomo

Il Patriarca Kiril ha pronunciato un messaggio riguardo l’aggressione in Ucraina solo la sera dell’invasione, il 24 febbraio. L’ha chiamata „Evento corrente”, ha richiamato „le parti in conflitto” affinché facciano il possibile per risparmiare le vittime civili, e ha invitato alla preghiera. Non ha usato i termini „guerra”, „invasione”, „aggressione”.

L’unico gerarca ortodosso, che ha condannato l’aggressione all’Ucraina è stato il metropolita di Kiev Onofri, Capo della Chiesa Ortodossa Ucraina del Patriarcato di Mosca che, precedendo Kiril di qualche ora, nel messaggio pronunciato ha chiamato i compatrioti alla difesa, alla solidarietà e al digiuno e ha chiamato la guerra „la ripetizione del peccato di Caino che, per invidia, uccise il proprio fratello”. Perché “questa guerra non ha giustificazione né davanti a Dio, né davanti alle persone”.

La ringrazio di cuore per le parole rivolte nella lettera del Metropolita Hilarion di ieri. Condivido la visione di Vostra Santità, che l’ostilità verso qualunque popolo è sempre inaccettabile. Siamo tutti fratelli, anche per questo percepiamo come nostra ogni sventura del popolo Ucraino o Russo. Per questo di tutto cuore preghiamo per la pace in Ucraina.

Affinché, però, la nostra preghiera non sia ritenuta una espressione ipocrita, essa deve essere accompagnata dai fatti. Credo che Vostra Santità sia un uomo di pace. Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo ci ha insegnato: „Beati gli operatori di pace, perché saranno chiamati figli di Dio”. (Mt 5,9). Per questo Ti prego, Fratello, di fare appello a Vladimir Putin, affinché termini l’insensata lotta col popolo ucraino, nella quale stanno morendo persone innocenti, e la sofferenza non riguarda solo i militari, ma anche le persone civili – soprattutto donne e bambini. Un uomo solo può con una sola parola fermare la sofferenza di migliaia di persone – e questo è il Presidente della Federazione Russa. Ti prego – il più umilmente possibile di fare un appello al ritiro dell’esercito russo da uno stato sovrano quale è l’Ucraina.

Nessun motivo, nessuna ragione giustifica mai la decisione di iniziare un’invasione militare in un Paese indipendente, il bombardamento di complessi residenziali, di scuole o asili. La guerra è sempre una sconfitta dell’umanità. Questa guerra – come ho scritto nella lettera precedente – in ragione della vicinanza di entrambi i popoli e delle loro radici cristiane – è ancora più priva di senso. È lecito distruggere la culla del cristianesimo sul suolo slavo, il luogo del battesimo della Rus’?

Ti prego inoltre di fare appello ai soldati russi, affinché non partecipino a questa ingiusta guerra, affinché si rifiutino di obbedire agli ordini, i cui esiti – come già vediamo – sono numerosi crimini di guerra. Il rifiuto di obbedire agli ordini in questa situazione è un obbligo morale. Verrà il momento di regolare i conti di questi reati, anche di fronte a tribunali internazionali. Se anche qualcuno riuscisse ad evitare questa giustizia umana, esiste un tribunale che non si può evitare. „Tutti infatti dobbiamo comparire davanti al tribunale di Cristo, ciascuno per ricevere la ricompensa delle opere compiute finché era nel corpo, sia in bene che in male” (2 Cor, 5,10).

 

Credo che molti dei russi inviati in guerra siano persone nobili. „Non sappiamo a chi sparare, loro ci assomigliano…” – ha detto uno dei vostri soldati. Ti prego dunque, di fare un appello a loro affinché tornino a casa loro al più presto, senza macchiare le proprie mani di sangue innocente.

 

Come discepoli di Cristo sappiamo che il principale strumento di lotta di cui dispone la Chiesa è l’arma spirituale. „Questa razza di demòni non si scaccia se non con la preghiera e il digiuno” – si legge in S. Matteo (Mt 17,21; Mc 9,29). In Polonia, rispondendo all’appello di Papa Francesco, abbiamo annunciato oggi una giornata di preghiera e digiuno perché si stabilisca una pace giusta in Ucraina. Ti prego, Fratello, di chiamare tutti i fratelli ortodossi in Russia, affinché intraprendano una simile azione spirituale. Credo che il Signore Dio non rimarrà indifferente alle nostre preghiere e rinunce. Credo che la preghiera e il digiuno cambino il cuore dell’uomo.

In seiner Botschaft an den Patriarchen von Moskau und ganz Russland am 2. März betont Erzbischof Gądecki, dass er das Unglück des russischen und des ukrainischen Volkes als sein eigenes ansieht und für den Frieden betet. „Damit unser Gebet jedoch nicht als Ausdruck von Heuchelei angesehen wird, muss es von Taten begleitet werden. Ich glaube, Eure Heiligkeit, dass Sie ein Mann des Friedens sind“, schreibt Erzbischof Gądecki. – „Deshalb bitte ich Sie, Bruder, an Wladimir Putin zu appellieren, den sinnlosen Krieg gegen das ukrainische Volk zu beenden, in dem unschuldige Menschen getötet werden und in dem nicht nur Soldaten, sondern auch Zivilisten – insbesondere Frauen und Kinder – leiden“, fügt der Vorsitzende der Polnischen Bischofskonferenz hinzu und erklärt, dass nur ein Mann mit einem Wort das Leid von Tausenden von Menschen lindern könne, und dieser Mann sei Wladimir Putin. „Ich bitte Sie in aller Bescheidenheit, den Rückzug der russischen Truppen aus dem souveränen Staat Ukraine zu fordern“.

Der Verfasser der Botschaft schreibt weiter, dass kein Grund den Einmarsch in ein unabhängiges Land und die Bombardierung von Wohngebieten, Schulen und Kindergärten rechtfertigt. Jeder Krieg ist eine Katastrophe für die Menschheit und dieser Krieg ist wegen der Nähe zweier Nationen mit christlichen Wurzeln sinnlos.

Erzbischof Gądecki bittet seine Adressaten auch, an die russischen Soldaten zu appellieren, sich nicht an einem ungerechten Krieg zu beteiligen und keine Befehle zu befolgen, die zu Kriegsverbrechen führen. „Die Verweigerung von Befehlen in einer solchen Situation ist eine moralische Verpflichtung. Die Zeit wird kommen, diese Verbrechen aufzuklären, auch vor den internationalen Gerichten“, betont er und erinnert daran, dass selbst wenn es jemandem gelingt, der menschlichen Justiz zu entkommen, er dem Tribunal Christi nicht entkommen wird. Und er bittet erneut darum, die Soldaten aufzufordern, nach Hause zurückzukehren, „ohne ihre Hände mit unschuldigem Blut zu beflecken“.

Schließlich teilt Erzbischof Gądecki Patriarch Kirill mit, dass die Gläubigen in Polen am Tag der Abfassung des Briefes als Reaktion auf den Appell von Papst Franziskus für die Schaffung eines gerechten Friedens in der Ukraine fasteten und beteten, da dies eine geistliche Waffe sei, die der Kirche zur Verfügung stehe. Er fordert Patriarch Kirill auf, alle orthodoxen Christen in Russland zu einer ähnlichen geistlichen Arbeit aufzurufen, denn Gebet und Fasten verändern das Herz eines Menschen.

Patriarch Kirill hat seine Botschaft zum Angriff auf die Ukraine erst am Abend des Tages der Invasion, dem 24. Februar, verkündet. Er nannte es ein „aktuelles Ereignis“, forderte „die Konfliktparteien“ auf, alles zu tun, um zivile Opfer zu vermeiden, und rief zum Gebet auf. Die Worte „Krieg“, „Invasion“ oder „Angriff“ hat er nicht verwendet.

Der einzige orthodoxe Hierarch, der den Angriff auf die Ukraine verurteilte, war Metropolit Onufry, Oberhaupt der ukrainisch-orthodoxen Kirche des Moskauer Patriarchats, der in seiner Botschaft wenige Stunden vor Kyrill seine Landsleute zur Verteidigung, zur Solidarität und zum Fasten aufrief und den Krieg bezeichnete als „Wiederholung der Sünde von Kain, der aus Neid seinen eigenen Bruder erschlug“. Denn „dieser Krieg hat keine Rechtfertigung, weder vor Gott noch vor den Menschen“.

An Seine Heiligkeit Kyrill

Ich danke Ihnen von ganzem Herzen für die Worte, im Brief, der gestern von Metropolit Hilarion übertragen wurde. Ich teile die Ansicht Eurer Heiligkeit, dass Feindseligkeit gegenüber jeder Nation immer inakzeptabel ist. Wir sind alle Brüder, und deshalb nehmen wir jedes Unglück des ukrainischen oder russischen Volkes als unser eigenes wahr. Deshalb beten wir von ganzem Herzen für den Frieden in der Ukraine.

Damit unser Gebet jedoch nicht als Ausdruck von Heuchelei angesehen wird, muss es von Taten begleitet werden. Ich glaube, Eure Heiligkeit, dass Sie ein Mann des Friedens sind. Unser Herr, Jesus Christus, lehrte: „Selig sind, die Frieden stiften, denn sie werden Söhne Gottes genannt werden“ (Mt 5,9). Deshalb bitte ich Sie, Bruder, an Wladimir Putin zu appellieren, den sinnlosen Krieg gegen das ukrainische Volk zu beenden, in dem unschuldige Menschen getötet werden und in dem nicht nur Soldaten, sondern auch Zivilisten – insbesondere Frauen und Kinder – leiden. Ein Mann kann das Leiden Tausender von Menschen mit einem Wort beenden – dieser Mann ist der Präsident der Russischen Föderation. Ich bitte Sie in aller Bescheidenheit, den Rückzug der russischen Truppen aus dem souveränen Staat Ukraine zu fordern.

Kein Grund, keine Begründung kann jemals die Entscheidung rechtfertigen, eine militärische Invasion in ein unabhängiges Land zu starten und Wohngebiete, Schulen oder Kindergärten zu bombardieren. Krieg ist immer eine Niederlage für die Menschheit. Dieser Krieg ist – wie ich bereits im vorigen Brief schrieb – wegen der Nähe der beiden Nationen und ihrer christlichen Wurzeln noch sinnloser. Ist es zulässig, die Wiege des Christentums auf slawischem Boden zu zerstören, den Ort, an dem die Rus getauft wurde?

Ich bitte Sie auch, an die russischen Soldaten zu appellieren, sich nicht an diesem ungerechten Krieg zu beteiligen, sich zu weigern, Befehle auszuführen, die – wie wir bereits gesehen haben – zu vielen Kriegsverbrechen führen. Die Verweigerung von Befehlen in einer solchen Situation ist eine moralische Verpflichtung. Die Zeit wird kommen, diese Verbrechen aufzuklären, auch vor den internationalen Gerichten. Doch selbst wenn es jemandem gelingt, sich dieser menschlichen Gerechtigkeit zu entziehen, gibt es ein Tribunal, dem man nicht ausweichen kann. „Denn wir müssen alle vor dem Richterstuhl Christi erscheinen, damit ein jeder das Gute oder das Böse empfange, je nachdem, was er am Leib getan hat“ (2. Kor 5,10).

Ich glaube, dass viele der Russen, die in den Krieg geschickt werden, edle Menschen sind. „Wir wissen nicht, auf wen wir schießen sollen, sie sehen alle wie wir aus…“, sagte einer Ihrer Soldaten. Ich bitte Sie also, an sie zu appellieren, so schnell wie möglich nach Hause zu gehen, ohne ihre Hände mit unschuldigem Blut zu beflecken.

Als Jünger Christi wissen wir, dass geistige Waffen das wichtigste Werkzeug der Kirche zur Kriegsführung sind. „Diese Art. von Dämonen kann nur durch Gebet und Fasten ausgetrieben werden“, lesen wir bei Matthäus (Mt 17,21; Mk 9,29). Als Antwort auf den Aufruf von Papst Franziskus haben wir in Polen heute einen Tag des Gebets und des Fastens für die Schaffung eines gerechten Friedens in der Ukraine ausgerufen. Ich bitte Sie, Bruder, alle orthodoxen Brüder und Schwestern in Russland aufzurufen, sich in ähnlicher Weise geistlich zu engagieren. Ich glaube, dass der Herrgott unseren Gebeten und Opfern nicht gleichgültig gegenübersteht. Ich glaube, dass Fasten und Gebet das Herz eines Menschen verändern.

У своєму посланні до Патріарха Московського і всієї Русі від 2 березня, архієпископ Гондецький наголошує, що ставиться до нещастя російського та українського народів як до свого і молиться про мир. «Однак, щоб наша молитва не вважалася виразом лицемірства, вона має супроводжуватися ділами. Я вірю, Ваша Святість, що Ви людина миру, – пише архієпископ Гондецький. «Тому я прошу Вас, Брате, звернутись до Володимира Путіна з проханням припинити безглузду боротьбу з українським народом, в якій гинуть невинні люди, а страждають не лише солдати, а й мирне населення – особливо жінки та діти» – додає голова польського Єпископату і стверджує, що лише одна людина одним словом може полегшити страждання тисяч людей, і я людина – Володимир Путін. «Я прошу вас з цілого серця закликати до виведення російських військ із суверенної держави, якою є Україна».

Голова Єпископату також пише, що жодна причина не виправдовує вторгнення в незалежну країну, бомбардування житлових масивів, шкіл та дитсадків. Кожна війна – це поразка для людства, і ця війна, з огляду на близькість двох народів із християнським корінням, позбавлена ​​сенсу.

Архієпископ Гондецький також просить московського Патріарха закликати російських солдатів не брати участь у несправедливій війні, не підкорятися наказам, які призводять до військових злочинів. «Відмова від виконання наказу в такій ситуації є моральним обов’язком. Прийде час, коли ці злочини будуть притягнуті до відповідальності, також й перед міжнародними трибуналами», — наголошує він і нагадує, що навіть якщо комусь вдасться уникнути людської справедливості, не можна буде уникнути Суду Христового. Тому, архієпископ Гондецький просить закликати солдатів повернутися додому «не заплямуючи рук невинною кров’ю».

Наприкінці архієпископ Гондецький повідомляє Патріарху Кирилу, що у день написання листа, у відповідь на звернення Папи Франциска, у Польщі проголошено піст і молитву за встановлення справедливого миру в Україні, оскільки піст і молитва – це духовна зброя у розпорядженні Церкви. Він просить Патріарха Кирила закликати всіх православних християн Росії до подібної духовної справи, адже молитва і піст змінюють людське серце.

Патріарх Кирило виступив з промовою щодо нападу на Україну лише вечором в день вторгнення, 24 лютого. Він назвав це «поточною подією», закликав «сторони конфлікту» зробити все, щоб уникнути жертв серед мирного населення, і закликав до молитви. Він не вжив слів «війна», «вторгнення», «напад».

Єдиним православним ієрархом, який засудив напад на Україну, став митрополит київський Онуфрій, глава Української православної церкви Московського патріархату, який, випередивши Кирила на кілька годин, у своєму посланні закликав співвітчизників до захисту, солідарності і посту, а також назвав війну «повторенням гріха Каїна, який убив свого рідного брата через заздрість». Адже «ця війна не має виправдання ні перед Богом, ні перед людьми».

Щиро дякую за слова у вчорашньому листі митрополита Іларіона. Я поділяю Вашу думку, що ворожість до будь-якої нації завжди неприйнятна. Ми всі брати, тому кожне нещастя українського чи російського народу сприймаємо як своє. Тому всім серцем молимося за мир в Україні.

Однак, щоб наша молитва не вважалася виразом лицемірства, вона має супроводжуватися ділами. Я вірю, Ваша Святість, що Ви людина миру. Господь наш, Ісус Христос навчав: «Блаженні миротворці, бо вони синами Божими назвуться» (Мт 5:9). Тому я прошу Вас, Брате, звернутись до Володимира Путіна з проханням припинити безглузду боротьбу з українським народом, в якій гинуть невинні люди, а страждають не лише солдати, а й мирне населення – особливо жінки та діти. Одна людина одним словом може зупинити страждання тисяч людей; ця людина – президент Російської Федерації. Я прошу вас з цілого серця закликати до виведення російських військ із суверенної держави, якою є Україна.

Жодна причина, жоден привід ніколи не виправдовує рішення почати військове вторгнення в незалежну країну, бомбардуючи житлові масиви, школи чи дитячі садки. Війна – це завжди поразка людства. Ця війна – як я писав у попередньому листі – тим більше безглузда через близькість обох народів та їхнє християнське коріння. Чи можна знищити колиску християнства на слов’янській землі, місце хрещення Русі?

Я також прошу Вас звернутись до російських солдатів із закликом не брати участь у цій несправедливій війні, відмовитися виконувати накази, які, як ми вже бачимо, призводять до численних військових злочинів. Відмова від виконання наказу в такій ситуації є моральним обов’язком. Прийде час, коли ці злочини будуть притягнуті до відповідальності, також й перед міжнародними трибуналами. Але якщо хтось і зможе уникнути цієї людської справедливості, то є Суд, якого не уникнути. «Бо мусимо ми всі з’явитися перед судовим престолом Христовим, щоб кожен прийняв згідно з тим, що в тілі робив він, чи добре, чи лихе» (2 Кор. 5:10).

Вірю, що багато росіян, що були послані на війну, є шляхетними людьми. «Ми не знаємо, в кого стріляти, вони всі виглядають як ми…» — сказав один із ваших солдатів. Тому я прошу вас звернутись до них із закликом повернутися додому якомога швидше, не забруднивши свої руки невинною кров’ю.

Як учні Христа, ми знаємо, що головною зброєю Церкви є духовна зброя. «Ці злі духи виганяються лише молитвою та постом», – читаємо у святого Матвія (Мт 17:21; Мк 9:29). У Польщі, у відповідь на звернення Папи Франциска, сьогодні ми оголосили день молитви та посту за встановлення справедливого миру в Україні. Прошу Вас, Брате, закликати всіх православних братів Росії до подібної духовної справи. Вірю, що Бог не залишиться байдужим до наших молитов і жертв. Я вірю, що піст і молитва змінюють людське серце.
